Michael has been in the entertainment industry for thirty years, this year. At the age of sixteen Michael was selected from thousands of young hopefuls by the late Michael Croft for the National Youth Theatre. He went on to study drama at the Northern Academy of Arts.
Michael made his professional debut as Joseph in Joseph and theAmazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Credits after this included the role of Rolf in The Sound of Music, Action in West Side Story, Edmund in King Lear and It’s Showtime for Walt Disney World, Florida.
This was followed by a number of years touring as a solo singer in many corporate venues and theatres in the UK and internationally working with artists such as Gene Pitney and Harry Connick Jnr.
His many theatre credits include working with the likes of Richard Todd, McDonald Hobley, Eric Sykes, Britt Eckland, David Griffin, Jasper Carrot, Anne Charleston, John Nettles and Mary Millar.
Having appeared in too many pantomimes to mention his roles amongst many include Buttons in Cinderella (8 times), Funny French Franc in Beauty and The Beast, Widow Twankey in Aladdin & Simple Simon in Jack and the Beanstalk.
Michael has produced and directed the UK tour the critically acclaimed Mad About The Musicals. He produced, directed, designed the lighting, arranged the music and until 2008 toured as the principal singer in the show. 2008 also saw Michael being nominated the UK ‘Producer of the Year’.
Highlights as a director are: Bugsy Malone (4 times), Romeo & Juliet (modern), Romeo & Juliet, Cats, Beauty & The Beast, Jesus Christ Superstar (USA), Blood Brothers (USA)
The Pantomimes he has produced, written and directed include Cinderella, Aladdin, Jack and the Beanstalk, Snow White and Beauty and the Beast and Dick Whittington.
In 2009 he produced and directed It’s D’Lovely – UK Tour, and Waterloo and Shakin’ All Over which toured the UK and Eire till 2010. He also Produced and directed and starred in the UK tour 2011/12 of A Night Of Musicals and more recently this summer’s All New Gaiety Whirl in Ayr. His new show for 2014 Love Changes Everything is touring the UK up and down the country and is a celebration of the music of Michael Ball and he will be belting out some big numbers!
2014 saw Michael once again directing Bugsy Malone and Romeo & Juliet, designing the lighting and sound for Cats & Hairspray.
Michael also has a thriving PA and lighting company that specialise in theatre design, operation and install. They carry all their own equipment, microphones, generic lighting, moving yoke lighting and top of the range projector systems. Also as qualified service engineers you can even have all PAT and general maintenance done in house.
He is keen to pursue a new area in entertainment that is radio presenting. He very much enjoys his time behind the mic here at LCR 103.6 FM
